5 Great Years of Butterfly Wings

Butterfly Wings is a free, interactive and fun community program for families with children aged from 2 – 5 years. The benefits of Butterfly Wings participation are many. We understand a great deal now about advantages to learning outcomes with early interventions. Butterfly Wings provides opportunities for children to develop early literacy and numeracy skills increasing the child’s potential for success at school. The program aims to stimulate the child’s intellectual and language growth while also supporting healthy social and emotional development and personal resilience. Parents are involved in this learning and the weekly activities conducted at Butterfly Wings support secure attachment between parent and child. Parents also develop a repertoire of songs, rhymes, simple dances and stories to use in everyday interactions with their child, sometimes improving experiences of the home routine and out in the wider community.
In the five years we have offered the program we have observed participation rates steadily increase from an average of 15 families attending per week to a peak of 30 families in attendance.
The popularity of Butterfly Wings is undeniable.
Some of our first ever Butterfly Wings participants are now in Year 2 at the school. Many families have returned to the program with the younger siblings of former participants. Some parents even adjust work schedules to allow attendance at Butterfly Wings on a Wednesday morning. It has been a pleasure to see modern family structures reflected in our Butterfly Wings participants. Grandparents have enjoyed enriching interactions with grandchildren and fathers who work away from home attending when they are able, have strengthened bonds and enjoyed quality time with their little ones. The program has also attracted participants from a range of social and cultural backgrounds fostering social links and reducing isolation.

Another great program helping grow our future leaders at Edge Hill State School.
