Original school building

Edge Hill was one of the earliest townships to be established outside the area known as the Central Business District of Cairns after settlement in 1876. The area was utilised for primary industry and Chinese market gardening and as the population grew and spread, locals began to build homes in the area. By the late 1930’s sufficient families lived in Edge Hill to warrant the building of a school.
It took several years to actualise plans and in February 1940 Edge Hill State School opened with 31 pupils, a single teacher and one classroom. The original school building still stands proudly today despite record wet season deluges, cyclones of all sizes and the threat of war on its doorstep during the Pacific conflicts of WWII.
The school has experienced progressive growth and expansion. Generations of local families have been, and continue to be, educated at our school. We are proud of the myriad achievements of former students both within the local community and further afield.
Students and staff enjoy the fruits of labour contributed by many groups of keen and concerned parents, teachers, politicians and Departmental Officers over prior decades and school leaders today continue the tradition of modernisation and school enhancement ensuring the best possible outcomes for our student populations.
Our history and heritage, typified by the values of fairness, responsibility, concern, respect for others and helpfulness, are defining and after seventy-three years Edge Hill State School continues to provide a learning environment that meets the ever changing needs of modern students across socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
Edge Hill State School has an excellent reputation and enrolment is highly sought after. An enrolment management plan is in place to manage enrolments. Current enrolment is 1060 students and the school is close to its capacity. Generally students are drawn from the suburbs of Edge Hill, Cairns North and Manoora. Students are accepted from other areas in Cairns if there are vacancies in a particular year level. The school has a high profile with families that have a cultural background from parts of Asia and is seen by the community as supportive of multicultural students.
Edge Hill State School prides itself on the level of community engagement and school partnerships that have been developed and sustained over many years.
