Our Instrumental Music Program is highly regarded and runs as an extra-curricular subject.

String instruments are offered to students from Year 3 and Brass, Woodwind and Percussion instruments to students from Year 4.  Our recruiting period begins in Term 3 of Year 3 and Year 4.

During classroom room music lessons Year 3 students will discuss, examine and focus on the string family of instruments and Year 4 students on woodwind, brass and percussion families of instruments. All students in these year levels will then attend a concert run by our instrumental teachers and senior students who perform and demonstrate the instruments.

On completion of this a link to a QR code is sent to all families, placed onto our school facebook page and in our school newsletter. This code links to an expression of interest form.  Families are asked to complete the form if they have a student who is interested in playing one of these instruments.  All forms are then collated and in early Term 4 each student who has applied will receive a small group interview with the instrumental teacher for that instrument.

Our programs are very popular and unfortunately, we are always oversubscribed. We do our best to ensure students are accepted in either Year 3 or Year 4 to give everyone who wishes to play an instrument an opportunity, but there is no guarantee.

Offers for our instrumental program are made to new students in the middle of Term 4 with paperwork and contracts required back by the end of week 9.

Every student in our instrumental music program receives a 30-minute small group lesson and participates in a 1-hour ensemble rehearsal each week- before school 7.45am-8.45am.

Ensembles run at Edge Hill State School are:

• Senior Concert Band
• Tuesday String Orchestra
• Thursday String Orchestra
• Percussion Ensemble

Each of these ensembles perform during the school year at various school functions, music evenings and the senior ensembles perform in the Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod each year and Instrumental Fanfare competition bi-annually.

Our performance uniform is as follows –

Edge Hill state school performing arts t-shirt, maroon school shorts or skorts, plain white ankle length socks and plain black shoes.  ​
