The Queensland Government has announced a new policy regarding the use of mobile phones and other devices in state schools, effective from the beginning of Term 1, 2024. Under this policy, all Queensland state school students are required to keep their mobile phones switched off and 'away for the day' during school hours. Additionally, notifications on wearable devices such as smartwatches must be switched off to prevent the sending or receiving of phone calls, messages, or other notifications during school hours.
At Edge Hill State School, the preference is for students not to bring any electronic devices to school. Parents are encouraged to communicate with the school office if they need to contact their child during school hours. However, if parents prefer their child to carry a mobile phone for safety reasons, such as when walking or riding to school alone, students are permitted to do so under certain conditions.
Mobile phones must remain in the student's school bag throughout the school day and should not be used while on school grounds. Additionally, smartwatches must be set to school mode with notifications turned off to prevent distractions during class time.
At Edge Hill State School, strict guidelines are in place regarding the use of mobile phones for video recording or taking photos of other students while on school grounds and in school uniform. Under no circumstances are students permitted to engage in such activities.
If a student is found to be violating this policy, their phone will be confiscated immediately. Furthermore, the phone will not be returned to the student directly; instead, parents or guardians will be required to collect the phone from the school office.
This policy is in place to uphold the privacy and safety of all students and to maintain a respectful and secure learning environment at the school. It underscores the importance of responsible use of technology and the consequences of violating school rules regarding the use of mobile devices.
It's important for parents and students to understand that the school is not responsible for any loss, damage, or theft of phones brought onto school premises.
